Join us at 5:00 PM on July 29th at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center for an evening lecture titled Shakespeare’s Legacy: From the Globe to Grand Opera!

William Shakespeare’s influence extends far beyond the stage: over 400 years after his death, his plays continue to be read and performed around the world, and adaptations of his work in film, television, musical theater, and more abound. The Bard also leaves a deep legacy in the field of opera, inspiring favorites in the operatic canon by composers like Verdi, Berlioz, Purcell, Barber – and Gounod. Ahead of Park City Opera’s production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, join us to explore Shakespeare’s enduring legacy in opera, the history of Shakespeare performance in Utah, and the story behind Gounod’s masterpiece.

Lecturer Benjamin Beckman is a composer, conductor, and pianist who serves as the Artistic Director of Park City Opera. He studied at Yale and the University of Southern California, and has worked with opera companies around America, including The Atlanta Opera, Sarasota Opera, Festival Napa Valley, Pacific Opera Project, The Opera Guild of Palm Springs, Opera Company of Middlebury Vermont, and Chicago Summer Opera. He will be conducting Park City Opera's production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Eccles Center in Downtown Park City on August 21st and 23rd.
